Research from Gallup indicates that about 4 percent of people identify as LGBT in the United States – or approximately 10 million Americans. But that number has increased dramatically in the previous few years, which means that there are likely more LGBT people than reported. From 2012 to 2016, the number of Americans who answered “YES” to that question jumped from 3.5 to 4.1 percent. That accounts for about 1.75 million more LGBT people in just four years.

More data – and more participation from LGBT people – is needed to understand the scope and diversity of our communities fully.

A recent study by NORC at the university of Chicago finds that many LGBT people continue to face discrimination in their personal lives, in the workplace and the public sphere, and in their access to critical health care. This experience of discrimination leads to many adverse consequences for their financial, mental, and physical well-being. Many LGBT people report altering their lives to avoid this discrimination and the trauma associated with unequal treatment. Younger generations generally report higher levels of discrimination and attendant problems than do older generations, and problems associated with discrimination are most pronounced among transgender individuals, individuals of color, and disabled individuals.

As the LGBT population continues to grow, this community remain disproportionately under­-represented in the legal field.

Many people in the LGBT Community have expressed their concerns about feeling intimidated or not being treated as equals when contacting law firms to discuss their legal issues.
